Call to the wind... The summer sun beat down through the cracks in the trees, splashing the ground with its citrus light. Mosses and leaves covered the ground in a thick carpeting of nature itself. The trickling of water could be heard amist the songs of the woodland. Small birds soared overhead, singing crisp, innocent melodies and from somewhere deep within, a fawn called to its mother.
Blending almost perfectly with the scenery was a brown shape. Sharp grey eyes blinked and peered out from behind a tall spruce. Long and slender limbs carried a beautiful mocha she-wolf quietly out into the open on a seemingly effortless gait. She lifted her nose to the air and sniffed. The scent of pine was most prominent in the air and it dettached itself from the mixture of other odors and entered the femmora's nose. She smiled and brought her head leveled with her shoulders again, like a true varg would.
She turned her head and gazed behind her, clear silver eyes scanning for a hint of ebony among the hues of greens and browns. She grinned happily and almost childishly, losing for a moment the wisened air that usually surrounded her. Where is Espio? Didn't get lost, did he? She thought to herself, amused. And although everything appeared and felt as it should be, she did not dare call out. She was no foolish pup. The healer wolfess took a deep breath and let the piney woodland smell befuddle her scenses, turning her face to the canopy overhead and surveying the clear ceylon sky through the cracks in the foliage.

Strong sunlight trickled through the dark green boughs of the boreal trees, the scent of pine thick in the air. Through the leafy hues there was a sparkle of deep indigo, which disappeared the second it faded into view. A shadow passed through the trees, weaving past ferns and fallen logs, until it seemed to disappear in the shade under the vast canopy.
Espio slipped out of the bushes, his tail swaying in the air and his expression unusually good-natured. Ebon ears swiveled to catch the fawn's cry, and atongue swiped across his maw . . . Life's circle was about to shift again, for he had food in mind. Yet . . . deer wasn't exactly to the wolf's taste that day.
A crystalline stream cut through the forest floor, glittering in the hollow of the woodland. Espio leapt toward it, gulping down water with a sigh. His black pelt absorbed the sunlight, which fried him on a warm summer's day that most arctic wolves actually enjoyed, since their pelts had shed to a thin white, which didn't drink in the heat as greedily. A brown form appeared in the water, which the he-wolf sprang for. The muskrat paddled away at the last moment, leaving the beta male dripping wet. He hid his embarrassment behind a tiny grin he shot Hatsuyume, and then shook his coat quickly, flinging sparkling droplets of water.

Call to the wind...
Grey eyes widened a bit in surprise as a nearby splash awokened Hatsuyume from her trance. She turned her head to look at the ebon beta with a sly grin on her face. She leaped back a little as he shook the water from his pelt, obviously embarassed. Laughing the chocolate brown femme took a step nearer, eyes twinkling with unusual mischief.
"You should have told me you fancied a swim, Espio," She teased him gently, grinning good-naturedly. Although Espio was always the one to hide his feelings, Yume could almost always tell. "It's a warm day, especially for you, huh?" She giggled a giggle most unlike her own but she caught herself in time and felt a pink tinge crawl along her maw.
The mocha shaman turned away, hiding her smile and gazing along the river. She lowered her ivory underbelly to the ground and sniffed the soft earth near the river bank. Here little swamp bunny... She laughed inwardly, feeling oddly vicous. Yume wasn't usually like this, yet today she could not help but being happy at the world and unusually hungry.
Her claws digged into the soft mud on the bank as she crawled closer to the water's edge. Without a warning, she pounced, splashing into the water. There was chaos and splashes that sent waves in the melanistic varg's direction. Soon, the water stilled and a trace of red could be seen. The timber cross emerged, a limp brown rodent dangling from her jowls, its long ratty tail still quivering. "Re eh on un'in arol, E'io?" She said through a mouthful of damp fur. Grinning, she set the mass down and tried again. "Are we on official hunting patrol, Espio?" She laughed, wondering if they should bring back their catch.

The melanistic brute shook himself once more, hearing the shaman begin to approach. He snarled at her, and although it was very playful it still wrinkled his features into a fearsome look. Her giggle sent unpleasant shivers through his body, and with a cough he followed her progress down the stream. He saw her pursue the brown creature, and as he pulled himself onto the bank of the stream, now mostly dry, the splashes and ripples she created soaked him again.
Not bothering to shake himself dry, Espio sat down and cocked his head as she brought back her catch. He lifted his chin with an authoritive air, his indigo eyes looking at the fresh-kill with a smile hidden within them. He stifled a chuckle as she mumbled a query, and answered with a snort. "No, we'll just eat everyone in the forest and leave our pack to starve," he growled sarcastically, yet with a playful demeanor.
Feeling like a young pup again -- which almost never happened -- Espio trotted back down to the stream, lapping up a bit of the liquid. A silver fish flashed before his gaze, and he lunged for it, snapping it up in his jaws. His dark sapphire eyes widened in surprise that he actually caught it, and he set it down on the bank, where it flopped for a little while before lying still.
"Hey, Yume, think fast!" he barked, calling her by her nickname. He had waded into the water so it was to his stomach. His swaying tail created ripples in the water, and suddenly he swept it up, sending millions of scattered droplets rushing toward the shaman. He brought his paw down in the water, creating another splash, and trying to get her as wet as possible.

Call to the wind...
The she-wolf whirled around as he called her name, yelping as she became soaked. Her eyes widened and she pulled her lips back to snarl at him but only playfully. A laugh escaped her and she leaped into the stream, seeking her revenge. She laughed and pounced on him, the water slowing her movements.
Feeling that her attempts to move were futile and slow, she grinned and turned swiftly in the water, sending a wall of crisp river water onto the melanistic grey wolf.
"Never thought faster!" She barked back, her voice filled with laughter. Her chocolate audits twitched to catch his reply and she took a step away from him in case he retaliated. However, as she brought her paw down, the stream bottom moved. The mocha healer yelped in surprise and slipped, crashing down under. She quickly resurfaced, sputtering and shaking the water out of her eyes.
Looking up, she realized that her sudden movement carried her into the deeper part of the river and the water now came up to her throat. She laughed and began to paddle back into the shallows, wary of any more movements of the river.

The gray she-wolf leapt for him, knocking him over. Water rushed over him, sending miniature rivulets streaming down his dark-colored pelt. Eyes twinkling, Espio hopped away from Hatsuyume, copying her movements. The glimmer slowly evaporated until he had calmed down to the point where he could breathe again. Just then he noticed that the ground had shifted, and that the shaman wasn't there.
Panic fluttered in the beta's heart, and he leapt forward to see if she was okay. Just then she came up, sputtering and shaking her head. She laughed as she approached him, but the playfulness had gone from his features. Before he knew it, he was at her side, circling her and letting his gaze sweep over her for any injuries. "Are you okay?" he asked urgently.
Just then, however, he grasped what had occured, and more embarrassment shifted onto him, making him frown and look away. Of course she was okay; Espio had overreacted . . . "Uh, we should get back to hunting," he growled, jumping onto dry land and shaking himself throroughly.

Call to the wind...
She nodded as he asked her if she was ok, smiling slightly sheepishly. But as his demeanor changed, the smile faded a little. She didn't completely understand what had happened but she knew better than to ask. Hatsuyume waded to the riverbed and pulled herself out of the stream's suction. She shook herself, a little away from the onyx brute as to not splash him.
The mocha femme stepped out of the little puddle that came from her fur and watched Espio for a bit, wondering what had caused his sudden change in attitude. True, she had never seen him so relaxed and playful before. Maybe that's why...he let his guard down, she said to herself, cautiously observing him, though not obviously.
She stepped tentively towards the thick trees, gazing at him, slightly timid, letting him take the lead. The baridigandian shaman smiled warmly, pretending that nothing out of the ordinary happened. "You're right...we should be hunting." She grinned and stooped to pick up the muskrat, stroding over to a tree and dropping the kill at the foot of it. She pawed a bit of dirt over the body, hiding it, and looked to Espio again. "Shall we?"

Frowning, Espio began to pad silently back into the trees, for the most part ignoring his friend and keeping all senses alert for prey. To her question, he merely grunted and jerked his head toward the shadows of the woods, where the telltale scent of birds and deer lurked. He broke out into a graceful run, his movements fluid and quick, and soon was pushing his way into the bracken.
Lifting his muzzle to sniff, Espio caught sight of a young buck walking into view. The stag's antlers were grown, with a couple prongs, and were covered with velvet. The brute licked his lips and circled, looking for Hatsuyume. His keen eyes shifted into the direction he had come from, and he lay down, keeping one ear on the foliage and one on the deer.

Call to the wind...
She fluidly followed him, the mossy forest floor muffling her footfalls and soon, she realized he had stopped behind some bushes. The feminine slowed her stride and stepped after him, careful to keep the rustling of the blades as small as possible. She scented the air through parted jaws, feeling the pungent odor of deer linger on her tongue. She gazed at the black shape of Espio who was ahead of her and understood.
The chocolate brown she-wolf approached Espio, but veered to the left, towards the buck's side while Espio took front. She started to tell him to becareful of the young male's antlers but decided against it. She gave a small swish of the tail and took position, tensing her muscles and waiting for his signal.

Espio nodded curtly as the shaman wolfess began to move toward the buck's side. He kept still for a little while, listening to the brush of ferns against his dark pelt. Being an expert hunter, he was fairly sure that he and Yume could take down the creature, although he wasn't positive. Suddenly he tensed, his dark eyes observing the creature for a few more seconds.
Ready . . . The ebony he-wolf would charge for the deer's throat, and perhaps under Hatsuyume's weight added to its flank, it would fall. He stood stiffly, his lips lifting in a silent growl, and then darted out. Espio stopped before he could do much else, for the stag leapt toward him in absolute panic, the whites of its eyes showing. The beta male sprang up, latching onto its throat and swinging once to dodge its flailing hooves.

Streaking after the melanistic brute, everything began to move in slow motion. She was aware of Espio clinging to the buck's throat and she felt herself collide with its side, her teeth snapping as she rushed at it. Yume backed up a little, then leaped, landing on the deer's back and digging her fangs and claws into it.
The brute seemed to shriek in panic and pain and soon it thrashed wildly about. The mocha brown female hung on, latching on to its thich pelt with claws and teeth. Perhaps in the fast and jerky motions it made, or perhaps the two of them over balanced it, but the tawny young buck tilted to one side and crashed to the forest floor.
She saw Espio at its throat and she quickly scrambled to her paws, trying to hold down the beast as best as she could. It was still struggling, fighting for its life when Hatsuyume leaped onto its chest and joined Espio, sinking her ivories into the back of its neck, paralizing it.

The deer began to thrash about, and Espio was knocked twice against its front limbs, brusing his side badly. Wincing in pain but with his teeth still digging into its throat, Espio's eyes shifted to the she-wolf again. The stag toppled over, and Hatsuyume bit deep into the back of its neck, paralyzing it. The ebony wolf lifted his head and began to shake it visciously, until finally it died.
Grunting in pain, Espio limped over to the deer's side and collasped, panting but smiling. I'm rather out of practice, he thought, looking at his game a bit spitefully. Hunger gnawed at his belly, and he suggested to the chocolate wolf, "Hatsuyume . . . do you want to share the muskrat? I'm sure we won't get our livers ripped out if we bring back the deer instead of some swamp bunny." He chuckled, then flinched, hacking a little. Breathing hurt, but he was sure no real damage was done.

The chocolate she-wolf nodded, panting as she removed herself from the buck. She stared into its rolling white eyes and turned to Espio, gazing at him worriedly. She nodded as he spoke, then walked over to him, limping slightly as the weight of the brute fell on her fore paw. She touched her maw to him and murmured for him to stay put, her breathing still slightly ragged.
She collected the muskrat and brought it to Espio, grinning serenely as she placed it in front of him. Motioning for him to eat first as he obviously needed to rest, she observed him, paying special attention to his rib area, fearing broken ones. She sighed and looked over at the limp form of the stag, wondering how they were going to drag it back. ((Is Glinpeels Forest connected to Nne Island in any way? Because they're going to have to drag it through water...))
Turning her attention back to Espio, she took a bite of the water rodent, slicing the piece of meat with her canines. Swallowing slowly, she felt her stomach growl and realized how long she had denied her hunger. "Espio, are you alright?" She asked, running a tongue over her lips, washing away the taste of muskrat. She feared for his saftey but if it was only bruises or even a broken rib or two, she could deal with it. And she was glad that he had not been too near the antlers. Yume shuddered as she remembered her youth in Volkenoneka, when one particular young hunter was kicked by a moose. His ribs had been broken but what the old shaman did not know was that one of the broken bones had impaled his heart. The varg died in mere minutes.

The black wolf closed his eyes for a few moments, when he felt Hatsuyume touch him with her muzzle. He stared into her eyes for a few seconds, nodding and sighing. Beginning to bite deep into the flesh of the rodent, he felt the warm meat start to replenish him. After a couple more bites, he let his snout rest on his forelegs.
"Espio, are you alright?" his friend asked him. He took in another painful breath, and shifted slightly onto his side, his nose gingerly touching his rib area. A tiny spark of pain burned in his chest, and he sighed, letting his shoulders droop. "I think I broke a rib," he replied softly, forcing a warm smile.
Licking his lips, Espio stood up with a grunt and walked toward a bush, where he lay down again. He knew that Yume would order him to rest anyway, maybe while she was getting herbs, so he half-closed his eyes and watched her. She was beautiful . . . but a tiny prickle in his mind reminded him of Sarita. He shook his head quickly. Hatsuyume was just a friend, one of his best friends . . . and Sarita was his mate.

Call to the wind...
Unaware of what Espio was thinking, the shaman nodded and let out a sigh of relief, hoping that that was all. She stood and smiled reassuringly at the onyx brute, looking around. "Alright...stay put Espio...I'll be back in a moment," She murmured softly in her calming voice. Stretching her limbs, she disappeared into the foliae, in search of beak willow and adder's tongue.
Hatsuyume stepped carefully over a fallen branch and nosed a shrub growing at the trunk of a spruce. She sniffed it and pawed at it. The mocha hued healer wolfess dipped her head and closed her mouth around the stem of the willow, her teeth breaking through the rod like stem easily. Carrying this in her teeth, she did not wince from the bitter taste. She found some adder's tongue growing near the riverbed and a thick clump of dandelion nearby.
Making her way back to the spot where she left Espio, Hatsuyume found herself oddly calm. Her mind seemed strangely clear as she settled herself silently next to the melanistic brute and dropped the herbs by him. She stripped the leaves off the adder's tongue with her teeth and pawed away the flower and stem. Picking out the dandelion, she took the other two into her mouth. Chewing, she grounded them together and felt the juices flowing.
"Hol' sill" she hold him through a mouthful of herbs. Pressing her paws gently where his ribcage laid underneath the ebonite fur, she generously spread the mixture into a poultice over the area. Licking at her maw, she picked up the dandelion and dropped it near his maw. "Don't move too much, Espio...Adder's Tongue will help the bruising and beak willow will aid your broken ribs... Eat this..." She pushed the bitter plant over to him with her paw, her eyes gentle as she watched over his frame.
